This Saturday a brand new alternative art and cultural event comes to New Orleans. It’s the JAJO Expo (that stands for January, April, July and October — when they’ll be happening) and it’s organized by Summer from Isoism. Summer modeled the JAJO Expo after Antigravity Magazine’s yearly Alternative Media Expo. If you want to check it out, the event takes place this Saturday, July 25 at Zeitgeist Multidisciplinary Art Center (1618 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd). Doors will be open for customers from 11:30 am to 5:00 pm and admission is $5. You can find out more and RSVP at the Facebook event page! |

History geek: You laugh, but where would you be without the 18th century? The 20th century, not the 21st, that's where. |

I actually miss studying for the MAT. It was nice to learn all about random, otherwise useless, facts. I quite enjoy studying the Norse gods, neurochemistry, and/or obscure English lit without actually learning anything about it. I've always been a big proponent of knowing a little about a lot versus knowing a lot about a little. I think this is the best way to go. Surface knowledge makes great cocktail party conversation and I'd prefer to live my life as one big happy hour. |

"Madoff" bill would charge rich New York inmates for jail Though federal prosecutors sought to strip Madoff of all of his assets before he went to prison, Tedisco told Reuters that his bill would force drug dealers and other high-profile people who serve jail time to pay for their prison upkeep. A lot of potential slippery slopes available to them if this passes.

Within our society a great lie exists. This lie steals the momentum of grassroots movements, the efficacy of political activity and the strength of legislative efforts. It dissipates the lasting emotional and cognitive effects of oral discussion, written discourse or video documentaries that seek to create positive ideological, policy or material change in an ethically devoid wasteland of greed and harmful, self-serving activity. Worst of all, the lie traps large swathes of the population in a sedate, perpetual trance of acceptance of and compliance with an unacceptable, monstrous status quo of environmental and social destruction and the needless suffering of all life on this planet. Corporations, their paid ideological technicians, charismatic progressives and even well-meaning but ignorant or uncalculating activists continually insist to the average ethically-minded progressive that he or she can meaningfully change corporate, social or political behavior for the better by simply “voting with their wallet.” The idea that individual people can create massive contemporary anthropological shifts for the purposes of morality, stability, prosperity or compassion continues to gain substantial popularity among the idealistic or among those who simply see the inadequacy of the present political and economic systems to effectively assimilate and implement abstract, metaphysical progressive concepts. Yesterday I made my first post in my political blog about the problems with health care and what reform what I would like. Well an LJ friend of mine who is a self-described socialist debated me in the comments section (a debate that is still in progress) about whether things like food, water, health care should be a right, etc and also about the nature of individualism. Now I've been of that school of thought before, so I could understand where those thoughts come from. And one thing that seems to come with socialists is that there is a general disdain for individualism (stating the obvious I know, but I just say it for discussion sake). "Americans are too individualist and it harms us" or "Americans are too individualist for their own good" is another. To me, it seems that except for all of us being humans, collectives are an artificial construction within societies and not anything honestly "real". I can be grouped as a "25yr old black male resident of Seattle, Washington, citizen of the United States America...former UFCW Union member, college student, unemployed"...yada yada yada. But ultimately, the only thing I am is me. Not strictly some piece of a collective, but an individual who has the only responsibility to make sure I succeed even with in the face of difficulties. Someone who can't *expect* to be dependent on other members of those collectives I can be grouped into. Sometimes when I hear bad things about individualism, I wonder if they include themselves in such a paradigm. Remembering when I was in that socialist mindset, I don't think I did. How can you, when you think govt force is needed to bring about balance to a system you believe is unjust? You believe you're being just and want to bring that justice to everyone and those who are very individualist are being unjust and supporting an unjust system. I think the libertarian idea of rights makes much more sense. Something isn't a right if someone else has to provide it (particularly by force). Rights should come from the individual, not provided to collectives. Thoughts?
